High prices keep Blu-ray from dominating the market
In a “We’ve won!…and so now what?…” moment, Blu-ray has eliminated the competition only to find that the HD format is not expanding as rapidly as initially expected. High prices and low availability seem to be the main issues - For instance, I can go and buy a new release DVD for under $20, however that very same Blu-ray movie would cost me $35-50… In addition to this, most players sold so far do not support all the functionality that studios are using on some new release Blu-ray discs. If I wasn’t already upgrading my toys and gadgets every few months, I would be quite annoyed to find that a ~$1,000 standalone Blu-ray player is already outdated… Industry analysts have suggested that it may take 12 to 18 months before Blu-ray finally penetrates the market. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see… |
